Enhancing Meridian’s Prosperity
In anticipation of the newly opened interchange at I-84 and Ten Mile Road, the City of Meridian created a specific area plan to project future land uses and identify a transportation network for a 2,800-acre study area around the interchange.
The Mayor and City Council recognized that the interchange would have a significant, positive impact on the City. They acknowledged that it was a unique opportunity “to get ahead of development” and clearly define the manner in which the area would develop in the future.
The City’s Comprehensive Plan contained general policies and land use designations for the area, but the Mayor and City Council felt there was insufficient detail to guide area development. They wanted an urban form that:
- Fostered a sense of place
- Balanced jobs and housing
- Coordinated land use and transportation
- Provided design elements to enhance quality of life and economic development
- Planned for a variety of housing types and densities
- Engaged property owners and developers
By combining land use, transportation, and design with a focus on mixed use, the Ten Mile Specific Area Plan does just that.
